Gateway computer 220volts

My son brought an HP PC computer home from peru. Now its 220 and here its 110 We bought the transformer plugs but the moniter says going to sleep like its low on power. Any suggestions. Should I just put on the adapter and plug it straight in the outlet?Can You Please help.Thanks John Lee Francis
