Gatewood seeking hat trick through the Wolferton Handicap (Listed Race) at the Ascot
The Class 1 Wolferton Handicap (Listed Race) will be raced at the Ascot over a mile and two furlongs on Friday, 22nd June. Competing for the £31,191 prize money is a line-up of sixteen four-year and older runners.
Closing in on a hat trick through winning the race today is Gatewood, Galileo’s four-year-old bay colt out of mare, Felicity. He is unbeaten in the two starts of the new season and collectively he has raced five times.
His first attempt at the maiden was a failure as he ended second on 13th June at Windsor over a mile and two furlongs while the winner, Highland Castle, won by a neck’s margin.
Grabbing on the very next chance, Gatewood won as the 4/9 favourite of the race on 26th June at Salisbury over a mile and two furlongs. He led the track of eleven by 3 ¾ lengths.
His final race of the previous season witnessed him ending fourth in the Keltbray Handicap on 24th July at Ascot over a mile and two furlongs. The title was taken away by Ivan Vasilevich who took charge by a head’s margin.
Finishing the closest to the winner was Grumeti while filling up the third slot was Muntasib.
All the losses were quite fairly compensated for in the current season as he is victorious in both the races that he took part in.
Gatewood’s seasonal debut was in the Infinity Tyres Stakes (Handicap) on 16th May at York over a mile and two and a half furlongs. With William Buick onboard, he led the runner up of the race, Romeo Montague, by one and a half lengths.
Making peace with the third position was Sirvino while the 4/1 favourite of the race, Flag Officer, had to be pulled up.
His most recent victory celebration was in the Investec Wealth & Investment Handicap on 1st June at Epsom over a mile and two furlongs. The 9/4 favourite winner was again partnered with William Buick and the two led the runner up, Ottoman Empire,
by a neck’s margin.
He has raced at Ascot before and today has 10/3 odds backing him which might just take him to the seasonal hat trick.
