Gatland looking towards David Young for future of Welsh Rugby
Warren David Gatland, who is currently head coach of Wales National Team, believes that Blues Coach, David Young, is the best available person to succeed him. He was on the famous ‘Wales On line’s Focus on Rugby’ show yesterday and he also participated in
a web chat with Welsh public. He answered a host of different queries put forth by the public.
Gatland has recently signed his extension contract with Welsh board, which will remain him as Wales head coach for the next five years until 2015. Although it was very clear that his contract will extend but it also shows, Wales currently has no highly capable
coach, which can coach the Wales national side.
But on the other hand current coach, Gatland, admits that he needs a Welsh man, which could take Wales on the road to success. He believes that Young is the best available person for the position.
Former Wales’ captain, Davis Young, who is currently coaching Blues, is the most successful regional coach in Wales and Blues won many top rated tournaments under his coaching including Amlin Challenge Cup and Anglo Welsh cup. Gatland admits, he has been
very impressed with the performance of Young, who has transformed Blues in a winning combination.
On his visit to Wales media office, Gatland said his plan is that he would like a Welsh coach to come through. David Young has been at the Blues for a fair time and he has had his ups and downs. The Blues have stuck with him through thick and thin and he
thinks he has really developed as a coach. He is going to be involved with the Baa-Baas against us next summer and he thinks it is fantastic that he is involved with that.
Gatland also said may be there are chances that Young wants to coach in some other country, to enhance his abilities. If this is the case then Welsh Rugby Union should encourage him and should support him, as his skills will enhance and it will be even better
for Wales in the long run.
“He is probably thinking that he has done his coaching in Wales, does he need a couple of years in England or in France? If that was the case, I think it would be fantastic for his development and I would really encourage the WRU to support him, even financially,
to make sure he is not lost to Welsh rugby in the future”.
Gatland said Part of the problem with coaches is that they go through ups and downs. They have one bad season and they are lost to the game for ages. We need to understand the ups and downs are part of play.
Talking more on the show Gatland said according to his new contract, he can’t go back to coach New Zealand. But on the other hand Welsh Rugby Board can terminate him if he doesn’t perform well. He said in fairness to the Welsh Rugby Union, they are looking
for some stability but there is a clause that if they are not great at the World Cup, they can terminate me.
He further said he understands that and he is not naive enough to realize that they won’t want to protect their own interests. He said they have to perform as a side and the Wales Rugby Union needs to put them as a squad, under pressure to get performances
and results.
Gatland also revealed a few of the key points of the new contract include, he has to improve the ratings and performance of Wales’s team and better performance in the coming World Cup in New Zealand. He has to work for the development of the game in Wales
as well.
Furthermore, he said, “now things are clear for me and now i will be coaching Wales until 2015. Now I can focus more on team and take them to the new glory”.
