  1. From Gatwick you arrive at Victoria train station, which is 30 mins.  There is the Gatwick Express which charge quite a lot, but are quick and not especially crowded, another train does exactly the same for half the price but stops a lot and takes about an hour.  If you need to get to Kings Cross, you'll need to get the tube - which will be crowded - they usually are, which will take another 20 mins underground.  Hope that helps.

And yes, you can buy on the day - there are no discounts for buying before you travel.

Hope you like London - bring an umbrella.

There's probably a bus, but it would take about 2 hours I reckon, never done it.

  2. There is a train from Gatwick direct to Kings Cross, run by First Capital Connect.  I use it all the time and its quite reliable.

You won't have any problems buying a ticket on the day, getting on a train and travelling straight to Kings Cross.  They leave around about every 15 minutes, and while the can get busy, you'll always get on (might just have to stand for part of the trip)

    Enjoy your trip!

  3. There are no realistic alternatives to the train as Gatwick is a long way from London. Tickets are available on the day from ticket windows and machines. The only time the trains get so busy it is a problem is on weekday rush hours. Please note that King's Cross Thameslink has been closed down and the station you must now use is St Pancras International.
