Indian cricketer, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rahul-c83321 “The Wall” Dravid, has said that Gautam Gambhir shouldn’t feel bad about Virat Kohli’s appointment as the vice-captain of the Indian team for the Asia Cup. There is no need for Gambhir to feel left out from the team, as Kohli was
rewarded for his performances on the tour of Australia, asserts the veteran batsman.
Kohli will act as Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s second in command during the Asia Cup – which commences from March 11. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Sehwag-c2739, the opening batsman, is the regular vice-captain, but the selectors opted to rest him for the series, and vacant post went to
Kohli.
Dravid, during the unveiling ceremony of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rajasthan-c837 Royals' new outfits for the Indian Premier League season 5 said, “I feel people like Gautam shouldn't feel left out from the team. He (Kohli) has had a great tour of Australia. He has done incredibly
well in Tests and in the ODIs. The selectors have given him a bit of reward.”
This statement from Dravid came in response to the earlier comments made by former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wasim-Akram-c96292, in which he said that players like Gambhir and Sehwag will feel dejected by Kohli’s selection as vice-captain.
Indian team had a disastrous tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746; the Men in Blue were the first team to be eliminated in the tri-nation CommonWealth Bank series.
Batting was India’s biggest let down; however, the silver lining from the CB series was the performance of Kohli. Even though Gambhir played exceptionally well but it was the performance of the 23-year-old that outshone the efforts of the left-hander. Kohli
gashed 373 runs at an average of 53.28 from eight games.
Dravid believes that selectors have made the right decision by promoting Kohli. He said, “It's a good recognition for his form. Having said that, Virat is the first to recognise that he has got to establish himself to go another step further.”
Some cricketing pundits believe that this step by the selectors is a clear indication, as to who will succeed once Dhoni steps down. However, Dravid beg to differ.
He said, “I think we know from the past that by just being the vice-captain you are not going to be the next captain. But at the moment Dhoni is doing a good job, so you don't need to look anywhere else.”
