http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gautam-Gambhir-c58623 to captain Kolkata Knight Riders in fourth edition of IPL
The management of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has announced its captain for the fourth season of the league – Gautam Gambhir. The IPL will kick off after the ICC World Cup 2011 ends.
“I believe that the KKR management has put together a terrific team and I am looking forward to the season,” Gambhir said after he was announced captain.
The left-handed batsman was the most expensive cricketer at this year’s auction. He was bought for $2.4 million and since Sourav Ganguly, who led the KKR in the first and third edition, went unsold this year, Gambhir was the obvious choice to lead the Kolkata
Knight Riders, which is owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan.
He has enough experience under his belt of leading teams as he took over from Virender Sehwag to lead the Delhi Daredevils in the second and third season of the IPL and also in the Indian Champions League (ICL) in 2009.
Gambhir, nicknamed Gauti, made his ODI debut for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 and is one of the few lucky people to have captained the Indian national team. He took over the realms of the team in the absence of regular skipper Mahendra Singh
Dhoni during a series against New Zealand which India won 5-0 in 2010. The aggressive batsman has played 106 ODIs and 38 Tests for India, scoring 3,719 and 3,234 runs with an average of 40.42 and 51.33 respectively.
In 2009, the KKR management announced they would follow a rotation system for captains to give most players an opportunity to lead the team. However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754’s Brendon McCullum led the franchise throughout the 2009 season which ended miserably, failing
to give a tough time to any of the opposing teams. So far the IPL has been a total disappointment for KKR, which finished last in the second edition and ended at sixth place in the first and third season. They have always carried big names in the team and
this year also there is no letting down in buying major players in the world of cricket. Big names like Yusuf Pathan, Jacques Kallis, Eoin Morgan, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Brett-Lee-c1197 will be playing for Kolkata.
Apart from KKR, three other franchises have named new captains. According to reports, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Virender-Sehwag-c95429 will be returning to his role as captain of the Delhi Daredevils because of Gambhir’s transfer, Mahela Jayawardene will lead the new franchise Indi Commandos
and Australia’s former wicketkeeper/batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Gilchrist-c918 will lead the Kings XI Punjab.
