The prolific top-order batsman of India and the former vice-captain, Gautam Gambhir, on Friday urged teammates to work hard and improve in all three departments of the game, if they want to regain the top ranking in Test cricket.
Speaking to media reporters on Thursday, the hard-hitting left-hander said that the Men in Blue have the talent to reclaim the world number one Test status. However, he admitted that there is still room for improvement in all three departments of the game.
"We have the talent and we have to get back to No 1 ranking in Tests," the Delhi Dasher said after his office team, ONGC, outclassed Rajnigandha Club at Modern School ground in the Lala Raghubir Hot Weather tournament.
"In international cricket, doing well in one department isn't good enough. We need to work hard and improve in all three departments of the game," added Gambhir, who recently led his Indian Premier League franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, to their maiden
IPL title.
The Men in Blue, under MS Dhoni’s astute leadership, reached the top of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 with a humiliating 4-0 Test series whitewash in August
last year. The humiliation at the hands of Poms was followed by another away Test series whitewash with the same margin, but this time at the hands of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, in January this year.
The back-to-back Test series whitewashes inside six months prompted critics to question India’s Test credentials. But Gambhir is hopeful that the Men in Blue will soon bounce back and reclaim their Test number one spot.
MS Dhoni’s captaincy has also been criticised for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Paul-Anthony-Hibbert-c81005 remained non-committal when asked
about him becoming the Test captain of India.
"That's for selectors to decide," replied Gambhir, when asked about his chances of becoming the national Test skipper.
It is pertinent to mention here that last week, the 30-year-old left-handed opener had said in a television interview that he was ready to take the responsibility of Test captaincy.
A hectic Test season is awaiting the Men in Blue, which will see them playing 10 matches between August 2012 and March 2013.
