CSA Provincial Three-Day Competition’s match between Gauteng and Northerns ended in a draw on Saturday, at Sir Lionel Phillips Ground, Pirates Cricket Club, Greenside, Johannesburg.
The final day began with Gauteng resuming their second innings from 92 for two. With OA Ramela on 39 and DP Conway on 51, the batting side was aiming to post a big total by the end of its second innings to leave the opposition in a spot of bother.
Northerns, who had posted a decent score to 302 in response to Gauteng’s first innings score of 269, needed to maintain an upper hand against their opposition and for that it was imperative to bowl-out Gauteng as soon as possible.
However, Ramela and Conway had other plans for the fielders, as the batsmen countered everything that came their way, dominating the bowlers and keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Northerns were completely outplayed in the first session as their bowlers and fielders were made to work hard in the centre by the two flamboyant batsmen.
This partnership actually tilted the course of the match in favour of Gauteng. Finally after posting 199 on the board, the partnership ended on the run out of Conway, who perished after jabbing a fantastic knock of 110.
With the massive partnership meeting its end, this was the moment for the fielding side to make a resounding comeback, however, they let this opportunity go to waste as S Burger forged a commendable partnership alongside Ramela to add to the woes of the fielding side.
The batting duo hammered their side to 294, before Ramela threw away his wicket on a run after hammering a staggering 142-run knock.
Finally with S Burger unbeaten on 35, the side declared their second innings on the wicket of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Khan-c71319 (5) with a score of 300 on the board.
Requiring 268 to win, Northerns began their innings with TR Kumalo and JF le Clus staging an opening stand of 20 before Clus hit the showers after scoring four runs.
With TR Kumalo unbeaten on 62 and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jon-Lewis-c1726 Pienaar standing on 20 runs, the day ended with Northerns on a second innings score of 90.
