Gavaskar says no to IPL Governing Council
Former Indian cricketer and captain, Sunil Gavaskar has decided not to remain a part of the Indian cricket board’s Indian Premier League Governing Council. Gavaskar said that he thought that the IPL was a commercial enterprise and hence, needed to pay salaries
to all the members working for it.
The Indian cricket board had earlier ruled on September 30 that the IPL governing council will be reduced to half its then capacity and much like the other committees of the BCCI, will have honorary members only. Ravi Shastri, the other former Indian cricketer
in the IPL Governing Council has agreed to work in the council on an honorary basis.
Speaking to a news channel, NDTV, Gavaskar said that he was contacted by the Indian board but after accepting the offer on Tuesday, he had had a change of mind and declined it on Wednesday. Gavaskar enumerated the reasons, "The IPL is a commercial enterprise
and non-BCCI members, former cricketers included, should be remunerated for the expertise, experience and time that they bring to the table."
Gavaskar, who is also employed by the BCCI as a commentator also said that he had no qualms in working on an honorary capacity for Indian cricket, but not for a commercial enterprise. Earlier, Gavaskar and the other two cricketers on the panel, Shastri and
MAK Pataudi were paid Rs. Ten million per annum for their effort.
However, the board not only changed the salary status of the governing council but also picked up a new set of members for the council. Chirayu Amin was named the chairman of the new council and it has only five non-cricketing members apart from the chairman;
Arun Jaitley, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ranjib-Biswal-c83999, Anurag Thakur, Ajay Shirke and Rajiv Shukla.
Lalit Modi, former chairman of the IPL was also dropped from the council. Modi has been fighting a rather acrimonious battle with the Indian board after he had been suspended from the IPL governing council at the end of the third edition of the tournament.
