The former Welsh footballer committed suicide a day after watching a game between Newcastle and Manchester United at Old Trafford in November, with an ensuing enquiry revealing his troubled domestic life and the pressure of management as being the reasons
behind the tragic incident.
Gavilan, the first Paraguayan footballer to play in the Premier League, revealed that he was traumatized upon hearing the heart-rending news of his friend’s demise last year, and paid tributes to him by terming him an exemplary father and a wonderful person.
While talking to reporters, he said: “I was on holiday; I found out on Twitter… it was such a shock.”
The 32-year old also took a stroll down the memory lane, recalling the time when he used to play for the Magpies alongside Speed. He indicated that he was a top professional who would help the young players in the squad by giving them invaluable tips and
was one of the most popular players amongst the fans.
Gavilan participated in Paraguay’s World Cup campaigns in 2002 and 2006 and announced his retirement from professional football at a young age of 32. He recounted the time when got an international call up in 2002 along with his Newcastle team-mates Kieron

He added, “At that time I wasn’t used that much in the first team and that gesture by him to get up and go out of his way to congratulate me is something I’ll remember. He was an example as a professional, a person and a father.”
When asked to reflect on his famous goal against Coventry City about 12 years ago, the former midfielder responded by saying that he still remembered the circumstances leading to that goal and mentioned that it was set up for him by Speed and Shearer.
He also went into raptures about the impact and influence that Shearer had made at the club during his playing days and termed as the best companion that he had ever worked with.
He added, “Alan was a top professional. He is very humble, very easygoing even though he might have been a God to the fans.”
