Gavin Henson is close to Saracens deal
Aviva Premiership side Saracens believe that they are on the verge of signing Welsh international and British and Irish Lion Gavin Henson.
The versatile centre trained with the club on Monday, but will not be able to commit fully to the club, until he has finished taking part in the television programme
Strictly Come Dancing and a deal is reached with his club the Ospreys.
Saracens are looking for a replacement for the injured Derick Hougaard and the club believe that Henson could fill the void left by the out-half.
Saracens chief executive Edward Griffiths said, "We are in a process with Gavin, but we have issues to resolve with the Ospreys and discussions with the BBC."
"We will have further discussions with Gavin on Tuesday. I don't think we are a million miles away," added Griffiths.
Henson is currently on unpaid leave with his club the Ospreys. The Welsh international has stated his desire to return to rugby with a London based club in order to be near his family.
Griffiths believes that Henson is in great condition, despite not playing competitive rugby for 18 months.
"I don't think there is an issue with his physical condition or his desire to play the game," In sport, we all have the same goals, and if Saracens offer him the right environment to rediscover his form it would be good news for Saracens and Welsh rugby
with a World Cup coming up,” he said.
Griffiths thinks that Henson is eager to return to rugby and that he has the hunger to rediscover the form that made him one of the best centres in the world.
“We met last week, and Saracens rugby director Brendan Venter asked him why he wanted to play and his first answer was the competitive nature of the game.”
"Gavin is competitive and wants to win Strictly Come Dancing, and we support him in that. We'll see what happens,” added the chief executive of Saracens.
