Gavin Henson signs deal with Saracens
Saracens have signed Welsh centre Gavin Henson after agreeing a deal with the Ospreys.
Henson has been out of the game for 18 months after taking an unpaid break from rugby with his former club.
The player trained with Saracens on Monday, 25 October, but a deal was only concluded today.
The British and Irish Lion is currently taking part in the BBC’s television programme Strictly Come Dancing and he will link up with his new club when he finishes his television obligations.
Saracens believe that they have captured one of the best players in the game and the Aviva Premiership side was looking for a replacement for the injured Derick Hougaard.
Saracens director of rugby Brendan Venter said: "Gavin is a special talent and we are delighted he has chosen to launch the next phase of his career with us. We believe he will enjoy our environment, on and off the field—that will be great news for our supporters
and for Welsh rugby."
The English club also praised the Ospreys and their managing director Mike Cuddy for their "constructive approach in agreeing to release Henson from his contract in the wider interests of the player and of the game".
Henson was looking to return to rugby after his absence from the game, but he was eager to move to a London based club to be closer to his family.
The centre has aspirations to return to the international set up before the 2011 World Cup.
“I know I still have so much to give to rugby and I can't wait to get back on the field, playing for Saracens and hopefully for Wales," said Henson.
Saracens are still unsure when Henson will make his long awaited return to rugby due to the player’s fitness and television commitments. However, Venter was impressed with the player during a training session and will expect to hand Henson his debut next
month.
