Gavin Henson to make his return to rugby with new club
Gavin Henson, who has been out from rugby since March 2009 due to an ankle injury, which he got while playing for the Ospreys in their EDF Energy Cup semi-final defeat by Gloucester, has now recovered from his injury and will be in action again in his Aviva
Premiership debut match for Saracens.
Henson has been saying recently that he wants to join any club in London, as his family lives in London and he wants to give them more time and it is very difficult to give them more time, while he plays for a Welsh club.
Henson had been playing for Ospreys for a long time before he signed a short term contract with Saracens. According to the contract he will play for Saracens until the end of this season. He has been signed as a fly-half cover for the replacement of Derick
Hougaard, who has been out for long time due to injury.
On his move to a new premiership, where some of the rules will be changed as Aviva premiership is being played under different rules, the current star of ‘BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing’ said that although the rules will be changed, he will adjust with the
new rules.
He has been playing rugby since he was only 5 years old so we can say that these minor change rules will not affect his performance and people will see some of the best action from him.
Henson will play his debut match for his new club on Nov 9, when the club will play a friendly game against USA at Honourable Artillery Company grounds in London.
After recovering from his ankle injury and joining new club, he has also desired to return to the national squad for the Six Nations Championship and believes that his performance in the Aviva Premiership will be the road to return in national squad. He
also believes that although, he has been out from rugby for the last 18 months and it is not easy to return to a national squad, he will try his level best to perform well and make a return to the national side. He said he can play rugby for eight to ten more
years.
“I would like to think the best is yet to come from me. That is why I have got back in the game. I have done all right in the past but I think I can play the game a lot better than what I have done. That is what drives me. I want get back in there. I want
to be a big name and regarded as a great player, so I have got a lot of work to do”, said Henson.
Along with his performance, there is another thing which can be the obstacle in his way to national squad and that is his contract with BBC and he is booked with them for Fridays and Saturdays. He can’t play matches on these days.
Henson said he has no regret about his decision to appear on the show, even if it delays his return to rugby. He said he wouldn’t have done a BBC show if a club had come to him in July or August. He said, he had not earned any money for 15 months and he
needed money and luckily the BBC Show was there then so he could earn. He has the plan to train with the club in the mornings and then do his dancing in the afternoons and in the evenings.
On his contract with Saracens, he said it is “awesome” and he would like to play here for a long time, as he can give more time to his children. He said success at Saracens will help him to be selected for his national squad.
Now it is up to Henson to perform well in Aviva Premiership matches and get a chance to play for his national squad, as his fans have been waiting for more than a year for his return to international Test matches.
