Gavin Henson made quite an entrance after 21 months of break at Wembley against Wasps as Saracens ended Wasps triumphant run with a 13-6 victory.
Henson announced his return by helping Saracens defeat the Wasps on his debut. Gavin Henson wants to play in deep end for Saracens to demonstrate his ability and prove that he is all set to play for Wales against England at the Six Nations. Henson’s fellow
substitute Andy Saull scored the critical try with fly-half Owen Farrell. Wasps left with a bonus point with their first defeat at Premiership since the epic 37-10 victory over Northampton.
All eyes were set on Henson who had a lot to prove that day. The first half was uneventful and Saracens were in control of the ball at scrum and the lineout. Wasps kept on struggling, but finely targeted the young fly-half Owen Farrell. Game came into life
after the first half when flanker Andy Saull, replacement for Henson scored a ‘just what the doctor ordered’ try. The only score in first half was also scored by Farrell who landed an easy penalty at the posts.
A great second half was witnessed by the crowd. Flanker Andy Saull had to stumble his way to the line, after a clever offload from Neil De Kock. Owen Farrell gave Saracens a ten-point lead. Gavin Henson showed up at 10-0 and within the first five minutes
of his entry, he almost scored a try. His fairy-tale comeback was crushed by a great tackle by Joe Simpson. Scrum-half Joe Simpson showed sharp reaction and brought down the Welsh star. Walder took the away team within four points after he struck two back-to-back
penalties before the hour was completed.
Wasps mislaid three attacking throws at the line-out, just at the few last minutes of the game. Owen Farrell’s third routine kick restored Sarries seven-point lead. The match was concluded with Wasps losing but still receiving a bonus point. Sarries made
it to the second position in the Premiership.
Gavin Henson is facing a race against time as the England game is on 4 February. The final selection for the Wales squad will be in mid-January by Warren Gatland. Henson wants to play a full game in his preferred position to prove himself and stand a chance
of being selected for Wales.
Gavin Henson is ready to give in everything to demonstrate his skills. He further added, "I didn't feel like I had been out for 21 months. I just need a bit more time out there and a bit more time with the ball in my hands hopefully.”
Henson is being pushy about playing at 12 rather than 13. Number 12 happens to be his original position where he has always delivered his best. Henson said, “I was at 13 and I have never really played there before. I think I prefer 12. I can get my hands
on the ball a lot more."
Whereas, the Saracens coach Mark McCall believes Brad Barritt will be the preferable inside centre. Henson will be playing a full match against Sale next week but at 13.
