Gavin Kyle Green remains consistent at the Iskandar Johor Open
Local amateur Gavin Kyle Green carded a decent four-under par 68, in the second round of the Iskandar Johor Open, to remain in contention at the Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club.
Green received a sponsor invitation to participate in the US$2 million event, and he appears to be moving on the right track to prove his selection right.
The first round witnessed him record a two-under par 70, and trailed the leader David Lipsky by seven strokes. Lipsky fired a nine-under par 63 in round one.
The second round started late in Friday afternoon, because of the weather delays right from the beginning of the tournament.
Starting on the 10th hole, the Malaysian carded two birdies without conceding a single bogey, to reach the turn in two under.
He then replicated his back-nine start by carding a birdie on the second hole, his 11th. After recording a par putt on the third hole, he had to return to the clubhouse, after the heavy rains and thunderstorms forced the second round to be suspended.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in being partnered with the Ryder Cup hero Sergio Garcia and the reigning British Open champion Ernie Els, in the first two rounds.
“It is pretty cool to play with them. On the first hole I felt nervous yesterday but I started to feel better in the round,” he said. “I stayed patient and started making birdies and more birdies. It was fun after that. It was really nice and they (Sergio
Garcia and Ernie Els) are really nice guys. It was something nice but it was cool”.
He added, “I took a lot of deep breaths to calm myself down. It was kind of normal today. I actually outdrove them on a few holes! That certainly eased the pressure. That helped me”.
He then had to return to the course, early in the Saturday morning, in a bid to complete his second-round campaign.
Despite playing under difficult playing conditions, Green did not lose his concentration over his game. He parred each of the first five holes that he played, prior to finishing the round with a birdie on the ninth hole.
