Gavin Rees outclasses Andy Murray to claim his vacant European Lightweight crown – Boxing news
Former World Boxing Association’s super-lightweight world champion Gavin Rees broke the unbeaten record of Andy Murray on Saturday, June 4, 2011 as he downed him after a unanimous points decision to claim his vacant European lightweight crown at the Motorpoint
Arena in Cardiff.
It was an accomplishing performance from the 31-year-old Welshman, Rees, who looked a bit tired after dominating the first half of the contest. However, he showed his physical fitness and bounced back into the fight with all of his zeal, energy and strength
and won the bout by a unanimous decision. He scored 115-112, 115-112 and 116-112 on all three cards.
Rees, who has already said he is aiming to be a two-weight world champion, was very delighted with his win over Murray. He told the media that now he will see how his team can get him a world title shot.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “It’s great to have another belt. I’ve won all of them now, apart from the Commonwealth. I don’t really want to go back for that because it’s less prestigious and less money. I’ve got a world ranking now, so I’ll
see what my team can do to try and get a world title fight for me.”
Rees might go for a title defence before and his opponent could be the winner of the all-British clash between Kevin Mitchell and John Murray, who are set to meet in the ring in July 2011.
The Rock, Rees, remarked he knows he can be a world champion and hopes he get a fight against the likes of Carl Froch, Kell Brook and Darren Barker.
He stated, “I don’t see why I can’t fight for a world title before the end of the year. My promoters Matchroom have got a lot of pull and they’re getting all the big names, so I’m sure they can get me a world title fight on a blockbuster bill with Carl Froch,
Kell Brook and Darren Barker.”
Let’s see whether Rees gets a world title shot or not after his impressive win.
