Gavin Rees takes on Anthony Mezaache to defend his EBU European lightweight gold – Boxing news
Gavin Rees, the current EBU (European) lightweight champion, is scheduled to defend his gold against Anthony Mezaache, the incumbent WBA Intercontinental and IBF international lightweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will take place on March 23, 2012.
The event is being promoted by Bernard Roos of R2 Image & Events and the ring for the event will be set up at Clichy la Garenne situated in Hauts-de-Seine, France. Gavin, infamous as ‘the Rock’, has been in a total 37 bouts and lost just one bout to Andriy
Kotelnyk via technical knockout.
The 31-year-old pugilist is currently ranked number three in the British lightweight rankings and is on a long win streak since his one and only career loss. Rees is not a heavy pounder who rattles his opponents by hard powerful jabs. He has collected just
16 wins by knockout and recently defended his title for the very first time against Derry Mathews.
Gavin has also held the BBBC British lightweight title and engraved his name for the very first time on the EBU gold after collecting a unanimous decision win over Andy Murray. The French Anthony is somewhat overshadowed by the Briton Gavin’s experience,
knockout proficiency, and even the win-loss ratio.
Anthony, 33, has been in a total 30 bouts and came out victorious in just 21. He has collected only six wins by knocking the opponent out. The Frenchman Anthony started to walk on a winning track after his recent technical knockout loss to Carlo Vinan.
Since then Anthony has won all his three bouts and even collected the vacant WBA intercontinental and IBF international lightweight titles after nailing Aristides Perez in a 12-round bout via unanimous decision.
Gavin in a recent interview shared his future ambitions and said that he is eyeballing Ricky Burns and wants to engage him in a bout with his WBO lightweight gold on the line. Rees remarked, "I would love to fight Ricky Burns this year.”
The former WBA world light welterweight champion, Rees, while sharing his thoughts about the upcoming engagement said, “I’d fight anybody anywhere and this fight with Mezaache proves it. I’m not looking beyond him because that would be dangerous, but I do
believe I’m out of his league and I will show that in Paris. I’m 100% better than this kid in every department, he’s a scruffy sort of fighter but nothing he does worries me to be honest.”
Rees definitely has the odds in his favour but Anthony might come up with an emphatic plan to outclass the Briton since the Frenchman is the number one lightweight in his country.
