Gayle adds “new dimension” to West Indies team: Chief selector – Cricket News Update
Chairman of the West Indies Cricket Board’s selection panel, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, adds a whole new dimension
to the national side.
“Chris is a player of proven quality and we are looking forward to him adding the new dimension to the side and his contributions as a senior member of the squad,” the chief selector said.
Gayle, who made his debut for the national side in 1999 against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760. Known for his belligerent batting style, the 32-year-old is a veteran of 91 Tests (having scored 6373 runs) and 228
ODIs (with 8087 runs to his credit). He is also considered a T20 superstar, having played a total of 127 games in the format.
However, the West Indies side has been without the services of the senior all-rounder for a period of 14 months, owing to a public spat between Gayle and the WICB. The Jamaican left-hander had a falling-out with the board following the 2011 World Cup, after
which he criticised the WICB along with head coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755.
However, a settlement between both parties was recently reached, aided by the mediating efforts of Gayle’s representative http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Julian-Robert-Hunte-c69628, WICB director Elson Crick, the Board's legal officer Alanna Medford, as well as Prime Minister
of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Ralph Gonsalves and Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.
Following the truce, the senior batsman has been selected for the upcoming 3-match ODI series against England, due to begin in Southampton on June 16.
Butts explained that Gayle’s return to the squad was part of the board’s plan to construct a balanced line-up for the 2015 World Cup, which includes a mixture of both youth and experience.
“We are now moving into the next phase of the development of the team as part of building our ODI side for the 2015 World Cup,” he explained.
“There is, what we believe, is a balanced combination of young rising players like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Johnson-Charles-c69060 in the top order of the batting in addition to the well-known senior internationals.”
