Gear stick stuck in park position?

Hi,

I have a 2000 Nissan maxima with automatic transmission.

My problem is that the stiick gets stuck in Park position.

This only happens sometimes and I have to use the shift lock to remove it from the park position. Otherwise the gear shift is smooth.

Can you pleas let me know why this may happen and how to repair it?

What's the cost of repairing such problem?

Check to see if your brake lights work, if they don't, your problem is with the brake light switch by the brake pedal. The transmission lock works off the same switch. Replacing or adjusting the brake  switch is fairly inexpensive.
