  1. Its so you can select the gears manually, you can select 2nd or 3rd when driving up hill or towing and the vehicle will stay in that gear, if you wish to you can virtually drive the car as a manual by shifting up and down the box.

  2. 2 is for control in mud, snow, ice. 3 is the same as high gear.d is high gear with over drive. better gas milage. 3 is also for towing. read owners.. manual ..

  3. R; reverse

    N; Neutral

D: Drive (meaning your Autobox will go up ALL the gears. Ie: 1, 2, 3, and fourth).

3; Third (meaning, your Autobox will only go up to Third gear. Or you can manualy Downshift from Top 4th to third).

2; Second (meaning your Autobox will only go up to Second gear. Or, you can manualy Downshift from Third or fourth to Second.

Best explanation ever this is :o)

  4. You have a four speed automatic gearbox. When you put the lever in 3, the gearbox will still change automatically, but only use the bottom three ratios, disregarding fourth.

In 2, it will only use first and second.

I strongly urge you to read a handbook before driving a car.

  5. your tranny as 3 gears,,,r is reverse,,,n is nuetral,,p is park,,, d is drive [high gear, 3rd] in d it will shift 1,2,3 as u speed up....u reall don't neet to use 2/3 ...

  6. They are just lower gears in the transmission, you would rarely even put the car in those lower gears unless you drive alot of hilly roads

  7. ? explains it very well. The "lower" holds restricting the box are used when you want to keep it in the lower gears, maybe for vigorous driving or for obtaining some engine braking, perhaps going downhill towing a trailer.  You usually have a P position too, which locks the transmission to back up the handbrake for parking.
