Gearbox wants to outsource Borderlands 2 for Vita – Video Games Update
Randy Pitchford, CEO and President of Gearbox software, wants Sony to jump in and develop a port of Borderlands 2 for the Playstation Vita.
Gearbox is the studio behind the popular Brothers in Arms games and the original Borderlands which came out in 2008.
Borderlands is a sci-fi first person shooter with a western theme. What makes the game unique is that it combines role playing game elements like perks, upgrades and random item drops with fps mechanics and vehicle combat thrown in the mix. The game is best
enjoyed with 4 player co-op.
The game uses a modified version of the Unreal Engine 3 and features cell shaded graphics which give it a comic book feel. The game impressed critics and gamers alike with an average score of 85 percent on Metacritic for the Xbox 360 version.
The game has four planned DLC expansion packs and was re-released as “Borderlands: Game of the Year” edition which included all the released DLCs and included an access key for the Duke Nukem Forever demo. The only criticism about the game was that the main
campaign had a really weak ending but the quality DLC campaigns made up for that. The game has sold over 4.58 million copies worldwide across Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.
Gearbox announced that Borderlands 2 is in development on August 5, 2011. The game is expected to be released on September 18, 2012 for PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
A Vita version is not in the works but Randy Pitchford has said, “One of the things I wish Sony would do is get behind Borderlands, because I'd love to see a Vita version of the game. I want to be able to have the character I'm working on with my PS3, and
then when I'm on the road with my Vita I can just keep developing that same character because it exists on the cloud somewhere.”
Sony might well be interested in listening to the man as Borderlands 2 will make a great addition to the already lacking Vita games library and will be a perfect fit on the handheld considering that it delivers a co-op RPG experience.
