Gears of War 3 developers want to emulate Call of Duty series, hints at Gears of War 4
Epic Games, the developers behind the vastly successful Gears of War trilogy, have expressed their desire to emulate Activision’s record breaking and industry benchmark setting, Call of Duty series.
Gears of War 3 witnessed Microsoft’s biggest release in United Kingdom and the game managed to sell 3-million copies of itself within its first seven days of release. On average a copy of the game costs around $50-60, which roughly translates to about $150-180
million in revenue.
On the other hand, sales figures for Activision’s Call of Duty series seem to get higher and higher with every release, as the latest iteration of the series, Black Ops, managed to set an industry wide record of managing to earn an incredible $650-million
within its first five days of release.
That is the something Epic’s design director, Cliff Bleszinski, wishes to emulate in the future. According to Mr. Bleszinski, “You look at the number that Call of Duty and Halo pulls and we’re not at that point yet. I’m hoping Gears of War 3 brings us closer
to that point. People forgot also that we’re only the third game of the series.”
He added, “There’s been a couple more Halo’s and a few more Call of Duty’s so who knows, maybe we’ll be able to build upon that success.”
The recent sales figures for the game have supported the design director’s claim and seeing how Call of Duty is a multiplatform game, Mr. Bleszinski has really set the standard high for the studio and the series.
Of course, no interview is every complete without the developer taking advantage of some free marketing, as Bleszinski concluded, “If you haven’t played a Gears game, now please give this one a try. We really do think you’ll like it a lot.”
On any other occasion, one might consider this as a way to boost sales for the game, but to be honest, Gears of War 3 is genuinely a game which no game buff should miss out on.
