The design director behind the Gears of War trilogy admits that he wanted more of a ‘band of brothers’ approach as opposed to the “dude-bro” approach to the games.
When it comes to console exclusives that define what kind of experiences Microsoft’s Xbox 360 provides then the Gears of War games have be right up there at the top – along with the Halo series of course.
The game centres itself around the struggle between the human population on an alien planet and the aliens who one day decide to come out from underneath the ground and retake the planet of their own. That may not be the best description but it is enough
to serve its purpose.
From there on in the player assumes the role of Marcus Fenix as he sets about stopping the Locust and later the Lambent, in an epic three game trilogy. The word ‘epic’ is not used lightly here as it is one of the better trilogies gamers are likely to play
on any console.
However, although the tone of the series is serious, it does have more of a “dude-bro” feel. At least, that is the opinion of Cliff Bleszinski, and seeing how he is the design director at Epic Games, it would be hard to argue against him.
According to him, he wanted to make the game a lot more serious than it is. He said, “I didn’t always make these dude-bro games at Epic. The intent was to make Gears of War a lot more Band of Brothers and take it a lot more serious.”
It is something that Mr. Bleszinski will be looking to address with future instalments in the series, if there are any. He continued, “If we get around to ever doing more Gears games, I hope we can continue to drift back more towards a Christopher Nolan
(The Dark Knight) type dialogue as opposed to a Tim Burton or Joel Schumacher Batman. But that’s always down the line.”
So it seems one can expect less of the annoying “Cole train baby!” dialogue in the game and have something more along the lines of Nolan’s work. Sounds good to us!
