Gegard Mousasi focuses on entering UFC, Strikeforce contract ending in 2012 – UFC News
The 26-year-old Armenian mixed martial art (MMA) Gegard Mousasi has been an MMA fighter since 2003. He has made a mark as an aggressive fighter and now looks at his future with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
He made his debut in April 2003 against Daniel Spek and won the bout with a technical knockout (TKO). Over the years he has proved his worth in various MMA promotions including Pride and Dream.
With his contract with Strikeforce and Dream ending early in 2012, Mousasi aims at entering the UFC. According to reports Mousasi can be given a contract by the UFC only if the MMA promotion’s management thinks he is ready to fight for the promotion.
In August 2009, he made his Strikeforce debut at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg event where he defeated Renato Sobral. He has remained lost once in Strikeforce where he contested in five bouts. He won three and one fight was drawn.
Since July 2010 he is unbeaten with four wins and a draw, giving him a solid chance to move from Strikeforce into the UFC. In December 2011, he won his Strikeforce fight against Ovince St. Preux. Although the unanimous decision went in favour of Mousasi
he wasn’t pleased with the way he ended the fight. According to reports, he has been criticizing himself ever since he beat St. Preux.
He is focused on his drawbacks and wish to overcome them at the earliest. When Mousasi started his career he was a light heavyweight contender but moved to the middleweight division. One his debut with Strikeforce, he made his return back to the light heavyweight
division and proved his worth by winning the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship at Strikeforce debut.
Mousasi has already expressed his interest to fight for the UFC. Recently he talked to the media and said, “I want to fight the big names, and the big names are in the UFC.”
This statement clearly shows that Mousasi wants to move up into the MMA division and create an impact in the UFC. Mousasi also wants to get a middleweight title fight in the UFC and mentioned in clear words that he want to fight Anderson Silva in the UFC.
