Geiselman, Andino, Joubert and Gudauskas through to Round 2 at Quiksilver Saquarema Prime
America’s Evan Geiselman, Kolohe Andino, Tanner Gudauskas and South Africa’s Shaun Joubert got off to a successful start at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 2013 Quiksilver Saquarema Prime, which kicked-off at Itauna beach in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil, on Wednesday, May 22, 2013.
All four surfers made their way into the second round (Round of 48) after get their better of their rivals in their respective Round 1 (Round of 96) heats.
America’s Brett Simpson, Michael Dunphy, Australia’s Mitchel Coleborn and Peru’s Cristobal de Col made the Round 2 cut as well following the second-place finish in their respective heats on the first active day of the competition.
The exciting surfing action continued in four-to-six foot waves that were on offer at the main event site on first active day of competition.
Geiselman, currently ranked 54th on the ASP World Ranking, emerged triumphant in the ninth heat of Round 1, which pitted him against Simpson, Brazil’s Jano Belo and his compatriot Messias Felix.
The American surfer collected an 8.50 off his first business-wave and went on to add an additional 6.23-point ride, thus finishing with a winning heat-total of 14.73 points.
“Conditions really changed since yesterday,” said Geiselman, ranked 54th on the ASP World Ranking. “The tide filled in during my heat but I did enough to get through to the next round. It was tough because Brett (Simpson) was on my back the whole time, but
everything worked out and I’m happy that we’re supposed to get good waves for the rest of the week.”
Simpson secured his place in the next round after registering a heat-total of 9.97 points.
The next heat pitted Andino against Dunphy, fellow countryperson Gabe Kling and Brazil’s Luel Felipe.
There were not too many potential scoring opportunities on offer during the course of the heat, but Andino managed to post a 7.83 and 3.33 on the score-board, thus getting to a heat-total of 11.16 points. The score kept him in the lead until the end to eventually
seal the fate of the heat in his favour.
Dunphy was successful in surviving Round 1 of the competition after taking second place with a heat-total of 10.83 points.
Joubert walked away a winner from the 11th heat after collecting a couple of scores in the six-point range to register a decisive heat-total of 12.50 points.
Coleborn accompanied the South African surfer into the next round after finishing with a two-wave total of 11.43 points.
The 12th heat concluded in favour of Gudauskas, who had managed to score a 6.93 and 4.83 off his top-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 11.76 points.
De Col managed to extend his life in the event as well after earning a total of 10.06 point off his best-two waves.
