Gel coat fibre glass boat?

Question

I asked yesterday about the best paint to use for fibre glass, I have decided on Gel coat, does any one know what preperation is needed and if I can use two colours, does the colour mix with gel coat or do I apply colour first then the gel coat. Also is it expensive to geta contractor to do it? I would like to do all the prep work myself.

I didn't see your last post, but if you've got old gel-coat, successive sanding with 400, 00 then 800-grit sandpaper will do nicely to restore the color, then wax for lustre.

If you've got bare glass, International paint's commercial lines are excellent. As was said here, getting a perfect hand-applied gel-coat is often not worth it- it takes a pro, and the prep work requires a pro's tools.

I might suggest International's Intergard 324 epoxy paint for 2 coats (it's self-priming), then Interthane 990 for the topcoat- it will look sharp!

Gel coat is the finish layer in the fiber-glassing process. To re-gel-coat a boat is a monumental task. You have to sand or grind off the original gel-coat and reapply a new layer.... You would be better off with a 2-part  polyurethane paint.

cat is correct ....use a 2 part marine paint, you can even use a one part -they work ,and look well too, if you are on a budget, however gas and chemicals will remove them....to re- gel coat a boat will be way, way too much work, and it will not come out good, if you are asking on here, (meaing you have never done it before, i.e. no experience)applying gel coat is not as easy as paint, plus it is very hard to sand and get smooth like paint, more than likely you wi not get a good finish
