Question:

Gelatin clogged my kitchen sink! What should I do?!?

I was making almond jello. And melted the sugar and gelatin together with hot water. I then realized I didn't have anymore milk and poured the hot water down the drain. The next day my drain is clogged and I can't wash my dishes. I believe the gelatin got hard and stuck onto my pipes. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

p.s. I don't want to call a plumber without trying to solve this out myself.

  1. Melt the gelatin with hot water.

Boil a tea kettle and pour the boiling water down the drain along with a squirt of dish soap.

Keep the hot water from the tap running for a few minutes to wash away the rest of it.

  2. boil a gallon of water pour in while boiling~if this don't work try drano or snake it

  3. Stop eating gelatin.

  4. pour baking soda down the drain and run hot water on it for awhile, then use a toilet plunger and see if you can break it up. if that doesnt work get the GEL liquid plummer. the gel will sit on it and dissolve it.

  5. Almond jelo?

    Eww almond.

We call it jelly here in New Zealand.

Anyway you should try dissolve the jelly by tipping boiling water down the sink.

  6. possibly drano but idk if it will work if it is completely solid in there

  7. first drain what you can.  Then put in boiling water, that will remelt the sugar and gelatin, if that doesn't work, try draino or something like that (go to Home Depot or Lowes, they have stronger stuff than Walmart/supermarkets), if nothing, find a plumber, your gonna need them

  8. Sit for a while with a hand held hair dryer pointed at the pipes with the hot water on a little. It should melt the gelatin.

  9. bring water to a boil and pour it down the drain. it will push it through

  10. Depending on where the problem is, you may be in trouble.  If you ran a little bit of water and it backed up, your problem is near the sink, and should be easy, the more water it took to fill the pipes and sink, the more trouble you're in.

AVOID a chemical like Drano, as it's designed mainly for SLOW drains, and will oxidize organic material.  for a total blockage, you don't want to use chemicals.  2 compartment sink?  plug one side, and fill the other with water until there is a couple inches in the sink.  then plunge it.  HOLD the other plug while plunging, or else you'll just blow the plug up, and make a mess.

(proper plunging technique: press down slowly to press the air OUT of the plunger, then pull UP slowly  to fill with water.  fit the plunger end securely on the mouth of the drain,  now give 1 or 2 MIGHTY pushes!  sharp, short, and fierce.  shout "by the power of GREYSKULL!" while doing it to help!)

this will work if the problem is in between the sink, and the vent in the wall.  if the problem is downstream of that, you'll need a plumber.

i suspect that this is just in your trap.  but if plunging doesn't work, a plumber will fix it in less than an hour.  adding chemical will only make HIS job worse, as these chemicals are terrible when left in standing water.

  11. If that's what it is, try very hot water... Gelatin melts rather easily, and is water soluble.
