Question:

Gelatin for harder nails?

My sister has very thin fingernails and is unable to grow them out. I have heard that gelatin will help with this. Is this true? If so, where can she buy it? Does it come in capsule form or will she have to drink it? If you know anything about this, please let me know. Thanks!

  1. Here is a quote from Wikipedia regarding this very topic. I think you will find your answer in here - which is no, gelatin doesn't do a thing for your nails.

"For decades, gelatin has been touted as a good source of protein. It has also been said to strengthen nails and hair. However, there is little scientific evidence to support such an assertion, one which may be traced back to Knox's revolutionary marketing techniques of the 1890s, when it was advertised that gelatin contains protein and that lack of protein causes dry, deformed nails. In fact, the human body itself produces abundant amounts of the proteins found in gelatin. Furthermore, dry nails are usually due to a lack of moisture, not protein."

Also here - it's the third question on the page:

Don't waste your money on gelatin.

  2. gelatin is a life saver.but it makes your nails grow faster, not necessarily stronger.they do come in pill form and you could get them at a health food store most likely(if they dont have it at the store you can always ask them if they're able to order it for you). jello, etc have gelatin in them too. if you want to make the nails stronger eat lots of protein and put Rosebud Salve on them as often as possible. it's what i use.

  3. Jello & similar deserts are gelatin based.
