Gemma Davidson at the Crayford Tracks with her wonder dogs winning one after the other
Gemma Davidson is a famous greyhound trainer whose father was in the same profession too. Being able to train dogs and become the part of greyhound racing means the world to her as that is what she always wanted to be her career. She goes to an extent saying
that she was born into greyhound racing.
She is 28 years, lives in East Grinstead, West Sussex. Her dad had an experience of 40 years with the dogs and she took over the training license as soon as her father, John passed away. She is amazes at the nature of her job where so many people work dedicatedly
for such a minimal reward.
She wishes that the economic recession would come to an end soon so that the racing industry starts booming and the earnings of the trainers can improve too because with the existing prize money it is not very easy to make a reasonable living. However, she
is glad to be employed by a track that pays comparatively decent amount.
She has around 130 dogs in her kennel which include pups as well and nearly two-thirds are her own. There are no more many owners around. According to her race tracks like Wimbledon contribute a lot for the cause of racing, which can also be seen as the
home of the derby.
From a dog’s point of view, Hove has to be her favourite track and when it comes to atmosphere, ambience and competition she prefers Crayford to be far better. A lot of her trainees have won at the same track and even many of those trained by her dad.
One of her progressive greyhounds include Lordsbury Kerry who did not start off with a very amazing career at Crayford since July, she has started being noticed with two wins from her last three starts.
In each event she has been able to race under the time bar of 24 seconds for the 380 metre trip and has now won in both A6 and A5 grades. Her most recent hit was at 23.58 seconds that also by seven and a half length. With such record she can almost effortlessly
win an A4 and also get the bookmakers going.
Ever since last thirty years, no one in the family could make for a remarkable win but an emotional and career turn came for both Gemma and Plane Daddy when they won the Grand National.
Describing the action, she said: "He came out of the traps really well. He is one of those dogs if you put him under pressure to just keeps going”.
He went through the last two hurdles very tactfully and ended up shooting away from Nebuchadnezzar by a short distance to win the 480 meters race at Wimbledon. He was in for a six-dog race which had two qualifying rounds all season. It was expected that
the record breaker, Toomaline would win however it did not come true in the end.
Being around racing greyhounds for almost all her life she says, "The biggest thing you have got to do is keep the dog happy. It takes years of experience to do it but you've got to know your dog”.
Her favourite and most esteemed greyhound trainers which she thinks cannot be bettered by anyone includes her father and George Curtis.
She considers Plane Daddy to be her best pup currently for winning the title lately. The recent addition to her kennel is Galtie Ned who won his debut race just last Saturday night. He has previously had five races at Thurles in Ireland the last two of which
he won. He really has much more instore.
Gemma Davidson is in contract with Crayford to race 35 dogs, in Kent, each year. however Plane Daddy and several other dogs are too good for the grades of races being offered here so she also has the option to race at other tracks nationwide. She is destined
to achieve way more specially due to her high potential hounds.
