Gemologist breezes at Palm Meadows with the Wood Memorial a few days away
The 3-year-old Todd Pletcher trained colt, Gemologist, has stayed undefeated in 5 career starts, but his stiffest test yet to come will be in the Grade 1, $1 million Resorts World Casino New York City Wood Memorial at Aqueduct race course, where he will
come up against the likes of Alpha, My Adonis, and the Tampa Bay Derby winner Prospective.
WinStar Farm owned Gemologist is the Kentucky bred son of Tiznow, out of mare Crystal Shard by Mr. Prospector, and the colt is busy turning in work outs for the 1 1/8 mile test at 7 April, 2012. Gemologist breezed five furlongs in 1 minute and 0.44 seconds
on 1 April at Palm Meadows Training Center.
Coupled with exercise rider, Hector Ramos, the pair came out of it as the fastest six workouts at the distance, and it pleased trainer Todd Pletcher.
Pletcher who was talking on the phone, further went on to say that Gemologist will be flow to Aqueduct on 4 April, 2012, from Florida. The colt as a juvenile ran 3 races, and was successful in all of them.
He broke his maiden at first asking at Turfway Park on synthetic surface, and then won an allowance/optional claimer over at Churchill Downs’ dirt course. He went on to down the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club over the same track at Churchill Downs to cap off
is 2011 season.
In 2012, Gemologist hasn’t raced in a graded stakes race yet, the bay colt has two allowance/optional claimer at Gulfstream Park, which he has gone on to win both at 1 mile.
“We came in with high hopes this winter, as he was undefeated as a 2-year-old with two wins at Churchill Downs,” said Pletcher.”
“Because his return was delayed, he might have been a little under the radar for some, but certainly not for us," Pletcher added. "From a conditioning standpoint, I thought he got exactly what he needed (out of the comeback race). Hopefully, he continues
moving forwardly.”
Gemologist will have to show that he has what it takes to be the favourite of the Kentucky Derby, if he goes on to down the traditional Kentucky Derby prep race, the Wood Memorial.
