Gemologist can or can’t? That is the question
The undefeated 3-year-old colt, Gemologist, is garnering all the attention going into the Grade 1, $2 million Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on 5 May, 2012, for all the good reasons, and if stats matter, there is something above that which would favour
Tiznow colt more than anyone on the Derby field.
It is a plus that he stayed undefeated until the Derby, and he looks as if he will join the ranks of those, who stayed undefeated and went on to win the Kentucky Derby, however, what really tilts the balance in his favour is that he had raced over the Churchill
Downs dirt track twice, and came out of both those races as the victor.
This really is an important piece of information while throwing a wager on one of the contenders, but there is more.
The colt is trained by one of the best conditioners in the business, who has gone on to bag four Eclipse Awards so far, and for the farm he trains the colt for is the most prominent in the Industry, and has been for quite some time now.
Todd Pletcher along with WinStar Farm, make up a combination that has success written at the end of whatever they do, but there is another force apart from the trilogy to be reckoned with, and that’s Javier Castellano, the rider who will mount Gemologist
on 5 May, 2012.
Javier must be oozing with confidence after his record-setting meet at Gulfstream Park. But apart from all of this, Gemologist wouldn’t even be the favourite to win the Kentucky Derby, because he’d probably be the third choice behind Bodemeister and Union
Rags.
“It’s a good question,” said trainer Todd Pletcher, who conditions the colt for WinStar Farm. “I’m not really sure why. He’s done everything he could possibly do. Part of it could be because the 2-year-old races he was running in were not the Breeders’ Cup-type
of races. He was a little late developing; he broke his maiden at Turfway Park and his first stakes was in the Kentucky Jockey Club (gr. II), and then he ran in the allowance at Gulfstream in his first race this year.”
