Gemologist sized it up inch perfect to win the Kentucky Jockey Club in style
The unbeaten 2-year-old colt, Gemologist, completed the first part of the double in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club over at 1 1/16 miles over the Churchill Downs’s dirt course under jockey J Castellano on 26 November, 2011, where he covered the distance in 1 minute and 44.46 seconds.
Ever So Lucky after a good break, dwelled in the mid pack made a good run down the stretch but couldn’t go past Gemologist as he finished second followed in next by Timely Tally in third.
WinStar Farm and Todd A. Pletcher were successful in landing the Kentucky Jockey Club with Super Saver in 2009 before sending him off to run in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby which he also won.
Todd Pletcher has been successful again in repeating the first part to the road to glory and now he will have to wait till May to see if he can do a Super Saver all over again in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, this time with Gemologist.
The Kentucky bred son of Tiznow, out of mare Crystal Shard by Mr. Prospector, Gemologist defeated Ever So Lucky by 1 ¾ lengths to win the $178,200 Kentucky Jockey Club.
Gemologist broke his maiden at Turfway Park on 24 September, 2011, under J Castanon. The pair took over a distance of six furlongs over the synthetic surface and edged past Fifty Five South in second and Got Zip in third, with winning time of 1 minute and 11.12 seconds.
Next up for Gemologist was an allowance claimer at Churchill Downs. He made a switch from poly track to dirt in his second race on 30 October, 2011, over at 1 1/16 miles and managed to bag that as well while taking care of a fast approaching Timely Tally who finished second and Space Race third.
Gemologist topped the 1 1/16 mile distance in 1 minute and 45.24 seconds.
In the Kentucky Jockey Club, Gemologist had a perfect trip when he tracked down Ever So Lucky and Seve. After the turn Gemologist easily passed the longshot Seve and then sized up Ever So Lucky with three furlongs to go.
Gemologist began to inch away in the final stages of the race and finally overhauled the leader to win the race.
