  1. You are much better off to get a good osteology text book, Tim White wrote one.

The hips of women are bigger and more flaring due to the necessity of a larger opening for child birth.  Men and women have the SAME number of ribs. Others who have suggested it is very difficult to tell them apart are absolutely right, except perhaps if you have whole hips to compare.  Even more important is understanding the population affinities of the skeletons you are comparing.  Men and women from different parts of the world ALSO differ from each other, not just by s*x.

  2. yeah the hips are wider in females

    Skeletal s*x Differentiation

It is actually quite difficult to distinguish between male and female skeletons as there is a clear range of overlap between the sexes for many measures. Indeed, there is in fact no certain, 100% guaranteed, method of telling the s*x of a skeleton from simple examination and inspection alone, as criminologists who have misidentified the s*x of murder victims, and archaeologists who have been unable to determine from skeleton X-Rays whether Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun was actually male or female, can confirm.

On average a male skeleton is larger than the female skeleton so this is a differentiation, but there is also a considerable overlap in skeletal size between the sexes - e.g. there are short men and tall women - so this is hardly a reliable method alone. Other significant differences between male and female skeletons are that female bones are usually lighter and thinner than more robust male bones; female head bones are smaller and more lightly built; and the female pelvis is shallower and wider than the male's. This latter difference makes childbirth easier. The pelvis is considered the best area to determine the s*x of a skeleton and the skull is the second best area - an estimation of s*x can often be determined through analysis of the skull (cranium and mandible) and post-cranial skeleton.

Skull and bone features vary from male to female and differentiation is usually based on the generalization that typically male features are more pronounced and marked than the female features

  3. women have rounder orbital bones(eye sockets) while men have square ones

    women have wider hips

  4. Yes, there are many such web sites. Google human anatomy.

  5. Well, first of all, I don't think women have more ribs than men.

Humans are all pretty much the same when we're formed normally.

And as far as hips go. I'm thinking it's the muscles in their hips that are bigger, or fat in their hips. Due to the hormones that females make. (estrogen, progestren (sp?) etc)

  6. there are two main differences in skeletal aspects between the sexes: A womans' pelvis is wider to allow for childbirth.  The other is that the only aspect that is the same in both sexes is the lower leg calf.

the reason for height, weight, and bone mass is a result of hormones that influence the genders.  Estrogen reduces development of bone size in females, while testosterone increases bone mass in males.  Likewise muscle development, fat layering, general strength.  For all of the power of men, women live longer because their bodies are not subject to the stress imposed by testosterone.

  7. well i know women have larger hips so that they can have children but im not sure about the ribs
