Question:

Gender construction through consumption??

Hi, can anyone suggest some sociology theorists that discuss this topic? I can only find some on gender or some on consumption. Finding it difficult to combine the 2. I am not focusing on advertising.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  1. I don't understand the topic.

You mean, construction, like construction workers?

    Consumption, eating food products?

  2. I'm pretty sure you already asked this question... and I already answered it.

Theorists who talk about gender and consumption: Thorstein Veblen (in Conspicuous Consumption) and Erving Goffman (in Gender Advertisements, among other places).

There is a woman who makes documentaries called "Killing us softly" that deals with gender construction in advertisements too, and I attached a URL to the youtube clip of that video.

People like to say that they aren't influenced by advertisements, but the fact remains that we are bombarded by them.  It's an interesting way to see how images of women and men are portrayed.  Why are women often lower in the picture than men?  Why do women often have their hands over their mouths?  This is all gender construction.

    Good luck...
