  1. Yes.  Look to the 5th house, it's ruler, applying aspects to that ruler, then count every other house to determine gender.  It's a bit more complicated than really what can be stated here.  If you need to know for your own chart, you should have a reading done.

  2. You can get an idea of number of children from a natal chart, but a specific number is probably not realistic.  Gender of each is more difficult and probably impossible.  There are techniques though.

First three signs are considered especially fertile: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces, the water signs.  Three signs are considered barren: Gemini, Leo, and Virgo.  The remaining 6 are so-so.

Check the 5th house and its ruler, particularly the ruler.  Everyone with Aquarius rising is not infertile.  Then check the 11th (5th from the 7th house of the spouse), and its ruler.  You might also want to check the Arabic part of children.  If most are in fertile signs it is an indication of many children.  If most are barren it means few or no children.  If it is close to a 50-50 split or if most are in the so-so signs it is an indication of few to several children.  There are methods involving the triplicity rulers devised my medieval Arab astrologers that get more specific, but i doubt they work all that well.

Even the above is a minefield. They are indications of fertility or ability to conceive.  I the chart is of a woman with a loaded 9th and 12th, she may be fertile Myrtle, but if she spends her life in a nunnery, it won't manifest.  The same is true if the nativity indicates damage to or difficulty with the reproductive organs.  That would take priority.  Furthermore, with multiple marriages the norm or close to it, things can and do change with the spouses.  You can do the same thing with the 9th and third for grand children.

Gender from a natal chart is really tricky and I would not bet heavily on the outcome.  There are masculine planets: Sun, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter.  There are feminine planets: Venus and the Moon, and there is one switch hitter: Mercury.  All the fertile signs are feminine.  If the relevant planets are all in feminine signs or there a lopsided majority in those signs including the so-so signs, it indicates more girls than boys and vice versa.  However the deck is stacked against the girls: four planets to two.  It is a fact though that more males are born alive than females, but more females survive the first year so the resulting percentage in the population is 50-50 or close to it.

In my opinion the best the chart can do with fair accuracy is give an idea of whether or not there is potential for children.  If you want the gender, let the medical professionals tell you.  They have a better batting average, although they don't get it right all the time either.
