Gene Lamont waits formal offer from Boston Red Sox – MLB News
Despite having two or more meetings with the front office officials of the Boston Red Sox, Gene Lamont still has to wait for the formal offer by the American League Eastern club.
A formal offer has still not been made, said Lamont to reporters when reached on his phone. He added he has not met with the club manager Ben Cherington since the last Wednesday, and is still waiting for any message.
Lamont met with the Red Sox majority owner John Henry on Tuesday and then on Wednesday met with the Chairman Tom Werner before finally set with Cherington. It was said the deal has finalised and decision it will be announced in two or three days, but as
said by Lamont, the final decision is still pending without any exact date.
"I've talked to people,'' Lamont said, "but I don't know what their time frame is now.''
Lamont has eight-years of experience at the big league as a manager, including four years with Chicago White Sox and four with Pittsburgh Pirates. Just a year after starting his managerial career in 1992, Lamont, who will turn 65 on this Christmas Day, led
the White Sox to American League Western Division and earned a Manager of the Year Award.
Gene has a competition with Bobby Valentine, a veteran with 21 years of managerial experience in four different clubs. Valentine is also waiting for a formal offer. Unlike Valentine, who is forceful and outspoken, Lamont is low-key and laid-back type of
person, who can be considered as a polar opposite of Valentine in temperament.
Lamont left the Pirates in 2000 and joined the Detroit Tigers as a third base coach under the management of Jim Leyland. Frank Thomas, a designated hitter for the Oakland Athletics, who played under Lamont’s management, provided a perfect tribute to his
ex-manager.
"I know he's a winner, and he always has been a winner," Frank Thomas said. "It's just the way he carries himself. He was always in control of the team, a level-headed guy when he needed to be, but a strict disciplinarian when he had to be. He's one of those
guys that was really easy to play for."
The Red Sox has decided to announce any player before the start of the winter meetings from next Monday. It clearly suggests the winning candidate will come into headlines during this week.
