Question:

Genealogists, ever run into the "Doppelgänger" situation?

Photographs and portraits of ancestors interest me. As they do most most genealogists, because they're more data.

A 6th cousin, met from research, looks exactly like my grandfather. (He sent back his picture to confirm the assertion. My jaw dropped.)

And I, apparently, look just like a particular founder of the National Trust in England, though he was a very distant cousin. This is not shoebox genealogical information, just interesting and fun, and have you run into a situation where it is just downright spooky or uncanny?

  1. I dont think that is to uncommon I have a cousin that our old pictures {High School) we cant even tell them apart except for our clothes. There is 1 yr diffrence in our age

  2. Yes!  A cousin sent me a picture of my great-great grandmother, taken about 1875 when she was around 14.  She looks exactly like ME!  Everyone comments on the resemblance.  I love that picture!

  3. Mine is actually a lot more recent than that - my Dad's sister. I saw a picture of her from the early 1970s when she was in her 20s, and I took one look at the picture and asked myself 'how did I get in such an old photo?'. I don't even have adequate words to describe how alike we look, it was bizarre. She was even wearing the sort of clothes I wear. My Dad says my mannerisms are like hers too.

She's in her 50s now and my husband jokes that when he looks at her he's getting a glimpse into the future...
