  1. Here's Walter and Adeline in the 1930, 1920 and 1910 census.  You'll notice that in 1910, they had just married and were living next door to an older Jacob Brooks, apparently Walter's father...

1930 Census – Sandy Run, Calhoun County, SC

Walter Brooks – 41 – born SC – both parents born SC

Adeline Brooks – wife – 40 - born SC – both parents born SC

Edwin Brooks – son – 17 - born SC – both parents born SC

Annie Brooks – dau – 15 - born SC – both parents born SC

Robert Brooks – son – 12 - born SC – both parents born SC

Walter Brooks, Jr. – son – 7 - born SC – both parents born SC

Amie Brooks – dau – 5 - born SC – both parents born SC

1920 Census – Sandy Run, Calhoun County, SC

Walter Brooks – 39 - born SC – both parents born SC

Adeline Brooks – wife - 27 - born SC – both parents born SC

William Brooks – son – 8 - born SC – both parents born SC

Edward Brooks – son – 6 - born SC – both parents born SC

Annie C. Brooks – dau – 3 - born SC – both parents born SC

Walter P. Brooks – son – 11 mos - born SC – both parents born SC

1910 Census – Sandy Run, Calhoun County, SC

Walter Brux – 24 - born SC – both parents born SC

Adline Brux – wife – 19 - born SC – both parents born SC

    Next Door:

Jacob Brux – 60 – 2nd marriage - born SC – both parents born SC

    Emma Brux – wife – 40 – 1st marriage - born SC – both parents born SC

Maria Brux – dau – 18 - born SC – both parents born SC

Jacob Brux Jr. – son – 17 - born SC – both parents born SC

Shalor Brux – son – 16 - born SC – both parents born SC

Wilson Brux – son – 13 - born SC – both parents born SC

Looking back to 1900, we find Walter living with his father, Jacob Brooks:

1900 Census – Sandy Run, Lexington County, SC

[Note: Calhoun County was carved out of Lexington County in 1908]

    Jake Brooks – b. May 1850 – 50 – SC-SC-SC

    Ammy Brooks – wife - b. Oct 1852 – 48 – SC-SC-SC

    Silas Brooks – son – b. Aug 1885 – 14 – SC-SC-SC

    Walter Brooks – son – b. Sept 1888 – 12 – SC-SC-SC

    Schumfert Brooks – son – b. May 1889 – 11 – SC-SC-SC

    Adeline Brooks – dau – b. Sept 1891 – 9 – SC-SC-SC

    Mariah Brooks – dau – Oct 1892 – 8 – SC-SC-SC

    Jacob J. Brooks – son – Feb 1893 – 7 – SC-SC-SC

    Shaler Brooks – son – Oct 1894 – 5 – SC-SC-SC

    Alfred Brooks – son – Dec 1896 – 3 – SC-SC-SC

This census indicates that Jacob and his wife Ammy (who's probably the same person as Emma) had been married 12 years.  Since Walter is 12 years old on this census, it's unclear whether Ammy is his mother, or whether he was the son of Jacob's previous wife.  The census also states that Ammy had had 17 children, 12 of whom were living at the time.  Sounds like Ammy had some children prior to her marriage to Jacob.  That means that some of the children listed could be Ammy's children from a previous marriage/relationship.  The census *should* list those children as step-son or step-daughter, but the census taker didn't always make that designation.

Also, you'll notice that the 1900 census lists Jacob as having a daughter Adeline, the same age as the Adeline who married Walter.  I could not find any other Adeline around that age living in the area.  Could this be the Adeline that Walter married?  If so, that could mean that either:

    a. Walter married his sister (doubtful)

    b. Walter married his 1/2 sister (possible???)

    c. Walter and this Adeline aren't really related

    d. Walter married a different Adeline, who we just haven't found on the census yet

You can probably find Adeline's parents' name by ordering a copy of her death certificate.  You'll need to know the approximate date and county where she died to order the record.  This website has info on how to order a death certificate:

Unfortunately, there is no 1890 census (it was destroyed in a fire).  But this looks like Jacob Brooks in the 1880 census, with his first wife:

1880 Census – Sandy Run, Lexington County, SC

    Jacob Brooks – 28 – SC-VA-SC

    Juliann Brooks – wife – 27 – SC-SC-SC

    Rose Brooks – dau – 7 – SC-SC-SC

    James Brooks – son – 6 – SC-SC-SC

    Eddie Brooks – son – 5 – SC-SC-SC

    Willie Brooks – son – 3 – SC-SC-SC

    Starling Brooks – son – 1 – SC-SC-SC

    Hope this helps some!
