General Manager Sandy Alderson aims to use Matt Harvey cautiously - MLB News
The New York Mets face an unpleasant reality of having a week rotation. They do have starters like Dillon Gee, Jonathon Niese and Johan Santana, but none of them possess a show-stealing kind of style. Thus, diversification of pitching responsibilities over
a number of pitchers is a most appropriate way to go with in the season.
With their starter Mike Pelfrey out due to an injury, voices have emerged from various quarters calling for the use of Minor-League prospects. Matt Harvey is one of the hottest candidates and has been termed as a next home-grown arm for the Mets in the making.
Mets’ General Manager however has declined to send him to the Majors. He maintains that regardless of loopholes the Mets’ rotation suffers, he does not want to cause his hurried entry in the season.
Calling Harvey a pure asset for the club, he feels it is not the right time to put it to use.
While this is so, the Mets’ pitching woes continue to wreak their effect on outcomes of their games, as another match-up has been lost.
In first game of three-match series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Mets dominated throughout most part of the play, but the moment the manager sent relievers on the mound, a solid lead of two runs was blown.
This also points to an inability of most of their starters to throw seven to eight strong innings and alleviate burden on the bullpen as a result. Unless, they have starters with good fastballs and impeccable change-ups, their misery will not end.
Harvey does have the potential to fill that role. He is young and by the dint of his fiery spells can become an important link in the Mets’ victories.
Only thing that has kept the Mets’ offence from witnessing its real impact has been the lack of solid support it received from the pitchers.
Meanwhile, Harvey will wait for the possibility of his return to actually become a reality.
Sooner or later the Mets are going to face the inevitable reality of giving him a chance. To sustain on the back of a present rotation they possess appears difficult for them. How long it takes Harvey to have a taste of the Major League will be interesting
to see.
