  1. General Manager of what?  Of who?  Of how many?

A General Manager could be making anywhere between 25K and 250K a year.  It really depends upon the skills they bring, the industry those skills are used in, and the type of people they must manager.

An assistant to who?  An Executive Assistant to the President of a large corporation may be making 100K or more.  The Assistant of a mom & pop shop could be making minimum wage.

In general terms (no pun intended) it is better for your career to take promotions and to have the responsibilities of managing others than it is to only take directions from superiors.  But, do not mistake managing others as a position that doesn't take directions from others.  Middle management often gets the squeeze from both the upper management (e.g. budgets, directives) as the lower levels (e.g. skills, resources).
