General Motors sponsor World Golf Championship
Sponsorship is the biggest issue after the weather to tackle in golf. PGA tour is in the process to sign a deal with General Motors.
General Motors is all set to paint the picture and name its Cadillac brand on a World Golf Championship event at Doral.
Sports Business Journal quoted unnamed sources in saying General Motors was near to returning to the PGA Tour sponsorship. Doral is the only World Golf Championship event on the PGA Tour, which has no title sponsor. Earlier, CA refused to renew the contract,
thereby, the PGA officials contacted GM, which was absent from the Golf scenario ever since their bankruptcy.
In 2009 the company that manufactured cars in United States declared bankruptcy and for the first time in more than 50 years, it was unable to put its name on the banners placed on the course. Buick, which is one of the core brands of the company and personal
endorser of Tiger Woods, had to pull back its name owing to the financial obligations that it could not meet.
Ed Whitaker, who is the interim chairman of GM is now on the PGA Tour Policy Board, which only further strengthens the idea that General Motors will return to title sponsorship sooner than later. However, the PGA Tour spokesman Ty Votaw could not be contacted
to verify the news as he was on a tour to South America.
This is it for the news that states that General Motors, which is known for Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac, has signed a deal with the PGA tour as the title sponsors for the World Golf Championship event, which will be taking place at Doral Resort and
Spa.
The documents of the deal will be released in the press very soon followed by a press conference. The PGA officials are not commenting on the deal as their official spokesman is not in the office to give explanations.
Apart from Cadillac sponsoring WGC, news of endorsements has hit the market. Rumour has it that Buick, who once was the official endorser for Tiger Woods will be signing a deal with Lee Westwood provided he becomes the new World number one on Sunday.
