Generally speaking, are things in Germany more expensive than England?

To clarify I'm referring to buying things from shops: Food, drink, clothes, media (newspapers, magazines), CDs, DVDs, presents, etc.

If I was to spend a year studying in the country, how would the money situation be? (We may even have a work placement out there as well I think...)

any help is great, thanks!

  1. Germany is definitely cheaper than UK, I live in the German French border, on the French side. I can't believe how much cheaper their things are compare to France ( well, Strasbourg). Lots of people in this province go to Germany to buy toiletries, foods, cigarettes ...etc.

UK is more expensive than France, and  I have been to UK, so UK is definitely more expensive than Germany.

  2. I think you will find it slightly more expensive in Germany than in the UK - just a bit.

  3. I am a German living in the UK and believe me the UK is much more expensive then Germany.  My niece came over twice this year and she didn't buy a thing because she could get all that she liked at least a third cheaper.

  4. Of course it depends on the actual city you will live in, but on the whole you will find prices of everyday groceries cheaper than in England. When I was last in England (which is a couple of years ago) I was shocked about the high prices for groceries. In Germany, competition between grocery shops is very tough, and discount shops are everywhere.

Within the last one or two years, prices for food have risen a bit more than usual so that the situation might have changed a bit since I had the opportunity to compare.

  5. Well Food and Drinks are cheaper there but that's all I know.

  6. generally a lot of things are cheaper in germany, food and drink are really cheap and alcohol even cheaper, at most local restaraunts i think beer is around 2-3 euro's which is about 2 quid, and if u go to villages its around 1.80 euro's. another thing is the alcohols alot stronger.

depends which magazines you want, german magazines are reasonable prices, but if you want british magazines, they will be more expensive.

cd's and dvd's i have found to be cheaper.

    hope i helped
