The vegan diet is a huge departure from the standard American diet. And vegans generally don't consume any junk food, which is something that is so embedded in our culture. No birthday cakes, no barbecues, no seafood festivals, no outings, etc. Is it more difficult for a vegan to go out and find friends and be sociable?

  1. um vegans don't wear a sign that says i am wierd jus be yourself -the mean/dairy thats all

  2. Huh?  I have plenty of friends.  I make family and friends birthday cakes, I go to barbecues (went to one Saturday - the host has kept a section of his grill meat-free since he bought it,) I go on outings.  What ever gave you the idea that we don't go on "outings?"  You're right, I'm missing out on those oh-so-important seafood festivals... too bad it's impossible to have friends if you can't go out together and celebrate overfishing...

  3. i don't understand why it would be. i am a vegetarian and that has nothing to do with my friendships

  4. It might be if the vegan person is so uptight that they refuse to have anything to do with non-vegans or they belittle the nonvegan for not being vegan.

I'm not vegan, but am vegetarian.  No one I work with is vegetarian, but we go out to eat together quite often.  I do not draw attention to the fact I'm vegetarian, I simply order something that I can eat.  I could care less what Bob on my right and Sue on my left are eating.

As for barbeques, most would simply take a dish they can enjoy.  I will bring veggie burgers to pop onto the grill.  And there are some great recipes for vegan cakes.

All in all, I think if vegans have trouble finding friends it is because they are so defensive because of judgemental attitudes of nonvegans and because some are so judgemental of those of us who "have not seen the light."

  5. You need to educate yourself on what vegans eat. They can fit in anywhere as long as they leave their "Meat Is Murder" tea shirt at home. :-)

  6. what a b.s. query again.

irrelevant.  never had issues  such as this.

  7. I really dont believe that there is no vegan "junk food", there's a lot actually. Anyway, I dont think its really hard. My old friends dont care about what I eat at all. I dont think veganism as a hindrance for meeting new friends too. What do you mean by no bday cakes, barbeques and seafood, it's not the basis of a being sociable right? I mean they can understand that I cant and I wont eat some food but some of my friends even try to bring some food that I can eat. It's not hard for me at all.

  8. i guess you could say it limits them from attending any type of ritual animal slaughter, but other than that i'm pretty sure they can do whatever they want.

  9. I eat junk food. I can havae most chips and vegan friendly cookies. and vegan ice cream. i like birthday cakes although if it is not vegan i kindly say no thank you. i barbecue my vegan burgers on the grill. and i dont even know what a seafood festival is... why no outings?

i dont get it at all?

perhaps as a meateater you see vegans as outsiders but i think we fit in nicely, and more healthy too! :)

  10. Veganism is not a huge departure from the standard American diet. I know a lot of vegans who do consume junk food but even if they don't that means they can't make friends? Vegans also do have birthday cakes, BBQs, outings, etc, I have never heard of a seafood festival in my life. No I do not think it is more difficult for a vegan to go out and find friends and be sociable, I actually think it is easier. Easier because I am more in tune with myself and at peace and more open and friendly to/with others, and likes to go places try new things, have fun, set up vegan events and socials, etc.
