Question:

Generating electricty in space?

If I had 2 objects where one represents the earth and the other the sun, but both were very small like a rubber ball size, but had the mass in proportion to the real earth and sun, could they be made to spin around like the earth and sun?

And if so could a plastic ball be put around them with a wire on it to gen electricty?

  1. They will behave orbitally just like the sun and earth, and if you extract electrical energy from the system, they will come closer together (lose potential energy)

How do you make a 100Mmile dia plastic ball?

  2. Yes (sort of) and no.

Any two balls could orbit one another at any distance.  But the force between your two balls will be very small, so the orbital speeds are probably going to be very, very low.

And no, you couldn't make a perpetual motion machine this way even if the balls were orbiting with a significant amount of energy.  If you used their kinetic energy to generate electricity somehow, they would slow down and fall inward.
