Question:

Generator Question on exhaust?

I want to extend the exhaust pipe on my 3.5 kw small gas generator and place the muffler outside the compartment it is in. Right now the muffler is 2" from the exhaust, but now it will be approx 2 feet away from the head. My question is, how will this effect the performance of the motor? And if so, in a good way or a bad way. The more input the better.

  1. make shure the exaust will not stick out to burn a leg as u get by it (like dive platform) and make shure the system does not leak.......sleeping on ,u could get poison gases

  2. The extra length should have little effect on the engine.  Do not, as suggested above, go to a larger pipe diameter.  Reduced back pressure can be as bad as too much. The reduced back pressure from a larger pipe can cause the exhaust valve seats to burn and warp.  This reduces compression, horsepower and performance and will shorten the lifespan on the engine.

  3. back pressure..can effect the motor...go to a larger exhaust pipe  {if it 1" now go to @ 2" should be ok then

  4. Probably make it run better and it won't hurt anything..

  5. Should be no problem.

Make sure the extra length...runs in a way that water can't flow back into your cylinders and water-lock the genny...you don't want the extra capacity to overflow the exhaust canister. You may need to upsize this...
