I just went to the pharmacy to fill my precription and they handed me something called "Ocello". I ended up returning it once i noticed because I am scared to get off of Yasmin, since it has been so wonderul for me - the lady said it's the same thing but still, I dont realy want to risk it - If i have my doctor write a script for Yasmin and have them dispence it as written will my insurance still cover part of it?

  1. I can't really answer specifically for generic Yasmin, but I have read that generic forms of birth control are not exactly similar to the brand name. For example, I was given the generic brand of ortho and I read on forum by doctors that it's not similar and can really throw off your body.

  2. It depends on your insurance.  Some insurances only cover generics while other insurances cover generic and brand medications, but the brand medications are at a higher price.

The choice between generics and brands is up to you.  They both have the same main ingredient, but the difference is that it is not made by the same manufacture.

  3. That happened to me yesterday!!  I love Yasmin. It's the only one I've tried that works with a med I'm taking (the med decreases the effectiveness of birth control). I don't think my doc would have prescribed it if she thought otherwise, although she didn't tell me she was writing a script for Ocello.

Surely your insurance will cover it. Go to their website to make sure, though. Insurance companies generally like for their members to use generic drugs, but I can't imagine them not covering something like Yasmin as long as they did before. So go to their site or give them a call. All you should have to ask is can they cover a brand named med when there are generics available at the pharmacy. (If they say no, find a pharmacy that doesn't have the generic yet!).

  4. Generic Yasmin is currently in legal limbo.  The brand holder is playing a number of games to avoid it coming on to market.  The first generic has actually been approved by the FDA, but it hasn't been released because of an injunction.  I've never heard of those birth control brands.

Many physicians do not understand the testing involved with generics.  Some of them really don't like generics, and getting them to prescribe one is very difficult.

Normally, if there is a generic available, the brand will cost either not be covered, or will be at the highest co-pay.
