Genetic counsellors often construct and utilize pedigrees when working with their clients, but they also have other tasks.  Quite often, genetic counsellors also take on the roles of psychological, medical, and fertility counsellors (although certainly there are genetic counsellors that work strictly with matters of genetics).

With regards to genetics alone, the typical counselling session might involve discussing family history, creating a pedigree, and providing information on certain disorders and their risk factors.  The counselling session might also include scheduling genetic testing or discussing the results of a genetic test, depending on the nature of the client's inquiries.  Outside the realm of genetics, the counsellor might offer the client links to support groups or other professionals (such as psychologists, medical professionals, and so on), as well as schedule follow-up meetings to address new questions, comments, and concerns.

Basically, genetic counselling can be strictly about number-crunching, but often it requires a more personal approach.  Emotions can run high in these situations, and pedigrees alone can't solve the problems at hand.
