For instance, what's the difference between Dolly the sheep and a plant that's been engineered to resist certain diseases?

  1. Genetic engineering and cloning!

Genetic engineering is when you modify the DNA and cloning is when make a duplicate of an organism, duh!

  2. Cloning is defined as genaration of genitically identical offsprings. In cloning genetical recombination can't take place.

Dolly was a cloned sheep, that means its sequence is similar to mother gene sequence (mother gene sequence means, basing on that sequence dolly is cloned).

Genetic modification: Normal gene sequence is modified at specific sites (not entair sequence, only small portion, which carry specific trait) by different methods.

    1).mutation

                                   2).recombinant technology

                                   3)Genetical gineering E.T.C

Disease resistant plants are genareted by inactivation/supprestion/deletion of disease causing  gene by recombinant technology.

  3. A clone is genetically identical the organism from which the DNA was taken.  Dolly, therefore, was like a younger identical twin of the ewe from which she was cloned.

Genetic modification changes only a small fraction of an organisms DNA.  It usually involves the introduction of foreign DNA from an entirely different species.  So the disease resistance gene could have come from something as different as a jellyfish.

  4. oh i think there's a big difference.

when you clone, you just make an exact copy of something. if the country is running low on ...beef. what do we do? we try to clone cows.

if you're genetically modifying something, you change it's dna so ..like you said... it can resist certain diseases or stand certain environmental changes. you modify it so it doesn't die out on you so you don't have to go through a shortage of that 'thing'. you ,in a way, make it much better than it was.
