They are on the forefront of this issue.

Monsanto is a major holder of most seed and farm chemical patents. These patents are against the plant variety protection act and put a strangle hold on farmers.

Monsanto modifies plants for many purposes, the most widely used is for weed spray resistance.

They also have a terminator gene in testing. This gene is a means to render a plant sterile so that the farmer cannot keep seed to plant and must buy seed from this company every year.

The problem with all monsanto seed (huge portion of corn, rice and wheat worldwide) is the patents. If I grow another variety of seed and their seed in another farmers field eventually cross pollinates with mine......then if I replant my own seed the next year (from cross pollination against my permission) I can be sued. Even if pollen travels 1/4 mile without my consent (as it often does) and taints my own crop I no longer own or have rights to replanting my own seed. As soon as their nasty GMO garbage infiltrates my crop they become owners to it's planting rights.

Now imagine that the terminator gene, which makes plant seed sterile, cross pollinates and infects other seed varieties? I could have a field of my own, heirloom, open pollenated food crop, planted with seeds that have been reproduced by my family for 100's of years.......

one accidental cross pollenation, which is very common could render my entire crop sterile. I could sell the crop as grain but I could not use my own seed that I own to replant, it would be sterile.

Imagine how that instance could effect food production and food genetic diversity on a global scale........pollen can travel 1/4 to 1/2 mile on wind, bees and birds take it much further.
