All my other siblings came out with brown eyes except my oldest brother he has green and yellow eyes.

Is is possible for me to carry the colored eye trait even though i have brown eyes? my moms dad had green eyes..is that why he came out with green eyes? and if so how did my mom carry pass the green eyed trait to my brother if her eyes are hazel?

  1. I'm not sure which alleles are recessive, but I'd guess green eyed. In ordre for your bro to be green eyed, both of your parents would have to have the recessive gene, so they'd be heterozygous (like, Aa as opposed to AA or aa).  There's a possibility that you have a recessive allele, but you could just as easily be homozygous(AA). There's really no way to know, unless your kids have green eyes.

  2. Yes, it is possible.  My family is pretty much the same as yours -- my mom has hazel eyes, my dad has brown eyes, I have brown eyes, and my brother has green eyes.  We all carry dominant and recessive genes.  Let's say a blue eyed mothered, whose entire ancestry had blue eyes, marries a man with brown eyes, whose ancestry was made up of mostly brown eyes but had a few blue eyes thrown in, and has a child with him.  Although the child will most likely have brown eyes, there is still a chance that he could have blue eyes.  If the child is born with brown eyes, he will still carry the blue eye genes, meaning that his children also have a chance of inheriting blue eyes.  If the brown eyed child marries a woman with blue eyes, the chances of his child having blue eyes goes up.

The rule of thumb is that darker features (dark skin, hair or eyes) tend to be dominant, while lighter ones tend to be recessive.  Recessive, however, does not always mean that it'll be overpowered by the dominant genes -- just that it's less likely that the recessive genes will be the ones to activate in the offspring.

Both you and I carry hazel, brown and green eye genes.  Since my grandfather also has blue eyes, I carry that gene as well.  If I have a child, though, he or she will most likely have brown eyes... but it's definitely not certain.

  3. Genetics is always a toss of the dice from both parents' heritage so green eyes wouldn't be that uncommon if Grandpa had green eyes. Yes, you carry the trait, just like your mother did, and brother's eyes turned out green from "the roll of the dice" in genetics.

  4. well i cant tell you y, but i can tell you that genetics are measured with a punnent square, and the probability of each trait (called a phenotype when you see something on a body, and a genotype refers to the pair of chromosomes (the "genetics")) is based on which phenotype is a dominant trait. and the percentage of dominant traits that was given from the parent of the parents. each parent gives one set of their chromosomes and it goes onto each side of the punnent square. dark eye colors are dominant and i would imagine green eyes are dark. if there is one dominant trait for green eyes, then there is a 50% chance the child's eye color will be green.  i am sorry about my orginization in this answer, i had a lot of points to make.

    hope this helps,

    Chado.

  5. It's that recessive trait again...it just skipped all of you and your brother picked it up first......or ...hate to say it but.....MAURY POVICH
